The Influence of Adrenal and Pituitary Hormones on Liver Arginase Activity Following Nephrectomy or Renal Pedicle Ligation in the Rat *

چکیده
Impairment of intermediary nitrogen metabolism has been reported in dogs with reduced or abolished kidney function.' In nephrectomized animals fed a high protein diet, the deficiency is manifested by a 65-75%o reduction of urea formation, by an early development of toxic symptoms, and by a short survival time." No explanation is at hand for the influence of renal function on urea formation nor for the observed increase in toxicity. On the basis of reports by Borsook and Dubnoff' and by Cohen and Hayano' concerned with transformation of citrulline into arginine in renal tissue, it was hypothesized that lack of the accessory renal source of arginine might decrease the plasma level of this amino acid and thus influence the urea cycle in the liver. This working hypothesis, as will be reported as part of this paper, has been invalidated by arginine determinations in plasma. Nevertheless, studies on liver arginase activity in rats, 72 hours after bilateral nephrectomy or 24 hours after bilateral ligation of renal pedicles, has demonstrated clearly a significant elevation of the activity of this enzyme.1' Changes in liver arginase activity in normal animals have been previously related to pituitary and adrenal cortical influences. '' It was of interest, therefore, to investigate whether or not hormonal influences are involved in the great rise in liver-arginase activity that follows bilateral nephrectomy or renal ischemia produced by renal pedicle ligation. The paper to be presented includes the results of this investigation.

The Role of the Endocannabinoids in Suppression of the Hypothalamic- pituitary-adrenal Axis Activity by Doxepin
Objective(s) The mechanism(s) by which antidepressants regulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis remain elusive. The endocannabinoid system (eCBs) which exhibits antidepressant potential, appears to regulate the HPA axis activity. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the role of the eCBs in the action of doxepin including its effect on the HPA axis. Materials and Methods Male Wist...
متن کاملInvestigation of the relation between the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity, IL-6 and hyperalgesia during chronic inflammation due to rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in male rats.
Introduction: The activity of Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis is increased following inflammation due to its closed relation with immune system. This axis indicates an increased secretion of ACTH, and corticosterone during acute inflammation while little is known about its activity during chronic inflammation such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study we measured the products...

Background and Objective: Diabetes causes damage and impaired renal function. It also causes impaired secretion of endocrine glands that leads to secondary metabolic disorders. Due to the role of curcumin in lowering blood glucose and adjusted antioxidant system, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of curcumin on the hormones of pituitary-adrenal axis and renal ind...
متن کاملEvaluation of antioxidant potential of Aloe vera and pituitary sexual hormones after experimental diabetes in male rats.
Background: Diabetes is a metabolic disease that is associated with hyperglycemia and infertility. Previous studies indicate that aloe vera may positively affect the blood glucose and fertility. Objective: the present study was carried out to evaluate effect of aloe vera on serum oxidant/antioxidant activity and reproductive hormones following experimental diabetes. Methods: sixty adults male ...
متن کاملEffects of Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes on Micro-Anatomical Changes of Adrenal Gland in Male Wistar Rats
Background & Aims: Changing the hormonal output of endocrine glands, diabetes leads to the occurrence of secondary metabolic disorders. Neuropathy, on the other hand, is the most common neurological complication of diabetes which affects the neuroendocrine system, in addition to peripheral and autonomic nervous system, contributing to exacerbation of disease severity. In this line, the present ...
